The beat

Put music on anywhere in the world and people will tap along to the same thing. Nobody teaches that. It is the first musical skill anyone has, and usually the only one people have before they start.

Four notes, evenly spaced. Count out loud with them: one, two, three, four.

That steady count is the beat, and everything else in rhythm is measured against it.
